We must get used to the scorching days. The heatwave that has engulfed Romania will continue until next week, according to meteorologists. From tomorrow, half of the country is under a heatwave warning. Daytime temperatures will approach 40 degrees in the shade, and the nights will be tropical. Doctors warn us to avoid going out as much as possible after lunchtime.
The southern part of the country melted in the sun today as well. In the midst of a yellow code heatwave, the heated concrete in the Capital made the atmosphere suffocating.
At lunchtime, the felt temperature was 39 degrees, the highest in the country. These tourists from the Netherlands thought they were in the wrong country. «It’s intense. It’s hot! It’s like Egypt. It’s definitely a surprise for us,» says a tourist from the Netherlands.
«I try not to move too much during the day. I wait for the evening when the temperatures drop, when you can be a little more active,» her partner confessed.
The heat intensifies from day to day in the Capital. Today is a yellow code, tomorrow will be an orange code, and on Thursday temperatures up to 39 degrees in the shade are announced in Bucharest. This means that in full sun there will be 45 degrees and the air will be unbreathable because the temperature — humidity index will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.
In the face of such temperatures, everyone has their own way of coping. «Cold showers or showers in general. Shade, coolness. A cold beer if you’re off schedule». «Water and ice cream and air conditioning in the office. Otherwise, I die of heat. I’m from Moldova and in Moldova it’s much cooler.»
«We’re not really coping well. It’s very hot at work. And outside it’s just as hot,» Romanians complain.
Temperatures will rise even more. Doctors recommend us, as much as possible, not to leave the house except in the morning. «Headaches, vision disturbances, dizziness can occur. Mainly they should go to the shade, hydrate, ask for help, if necessary, even call 112, request an ambulance,» says Ciprian Duţulescu, head of the UPU SJU Deva section.
For the following days, when temperatures are rising non-stop, authorities in Timişoara have decided to set up four anti-heatwave points in the city. The same goes for other areas of the country under a heatwave warning. The wave of hot air suffocating Romania will persist until next week, say meteorologists. Even the nights will be hot.
«The highest night values will be on the coast and in the western hills, where even 24, possibly 25 degrees will be recorded during the nights,» says Oana Păduraru, meteorologist.
