With Easter holidays approaching quickly, Romanians have already started preparing for the festive meal. The lamb is an essential part of the menu, however, this year many are thinking twice before buying this type of meat, due to the high prices. The huge price at which a kilogram of lamb is being sold in Mega Image in Bucharest has raised eyebrows.
The Easter meal will cost Romanians more this year. Prices have increased significantly, and many are considering economizing this time, giving up lavish meals. However, even so, lamb cannot be missing from the Easter menu. So, how much does a kilogram of this type of meat cost now?
This year, Romanians are preparing for the most expensive Easter in the last 21 years. In 2024, we will pay for the holiday meal almost a quarter more than last year. This is because food in our country has become more expensive, on average, by over 2%.
Thus, those who have already started shopping for Easter holidays have noticed that the prices for specific products are quite high. Therefore, this year, many Romanians go home with emptier shopping baskets.
However, even in this context, lamb cannot be missing from the Easter table, so Romanians have flocked to stores looking for the lowest price. Well, they didn’t have much luck, because the price for a kilogram of lamb meat has exploded.
For example, in the Mega Image stores in Bucharest, lamb meat is sold at the price of 49.9 lei/kg. The price is quite high, which makes many Romanians think twice before buying.
The price for lamb meat has increased.
Although the prices practiced in stores for lamb meat are higher than last year, farmers say the trend should have been the opposite. The price for lamb meat should decrease, because corn has become cheaper.
However, even so, the general trend is to increase the price, because the demand is high, and the offer is quite small. It seems that few are those who still have lambs for sale, so they can afford not to lower the price.
«This year, lamb meat should not have been more expensive, because corn has become cheaper, it has decreased after it was also brought from Ukraine. On the contrary, the meat should have decreased by 10 lei per kilogram. Last year a kilogram of corn was about 1, 4 lei, in 2024 I took it with 0.7 lei, half the price.
