Öregedő bőr, hajhullás, sárga fogak – a dohányzás következményei

Smoking causes numerous physical changes that we often overlook. Nicotine, components, and other harmful substances in cigarettes gradually destroy the body, leaving visible traces behind. One of the most common effects is changes in the teeth and gums. Smokers are 85% more at risk of suffering from gum diseases, chronic bad breath, and tooth loss due to oral infections. But that’s not all: smoking also causes hair loss. Nicotine narrows the vessels, reduces blood flow to the hair follicles, and accelerates baldness, especially in Asian men.

The skin is also a major victim of smoking. Smokers have more wrinkles, especially around the mouth and in the corners of the eyes, as the vessels narrow and the skin’s moisture content decreases. Over time, the skin loses its elasticity, leading to faster sagging of the chest and arms than in non-smokers. Another surprising effect is weight change. Although smoking can suppress appetite and speed up metabolism, it increases the accumulation of abdominal and upper body fat, making smokers more prone to belly fat and a higher waist-hip ratio. This is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

Not only does it affect body shape, smoking causes noticeable changes in the appearance of hands and nails. Cigarette smoke contains substances that discolor the skin and nails, giving them a yellow hue. Although these stains may fade after quitting, other effects are harder to reverse. The physical changes resulting from smoking may initially seem minor, but over time they become more obvious and harder to avoid. The good news is that the body can regenerate after quitting. Quitting now can slow down aging, improve skin health, and reduce the risk of serious diseases. Quitting smoking is not only about the health of internal organs, but also about maintaining appearance and quality of life.
