A week after the massacre in the municipality of León, which left four women and two minors dead, the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Guanajuato announced the arrest of two people, allegedly the material authors of the attack. The tragic event occurred on June 9 in a neighborhood located on Pénjamo street, around 2:00 hours, when an armed group broke into the house and opened fire on the residents.
The victims were identified as Naomi Narayama, Aracely, Nayeli Yareck, Ana Cristina and two minors, a girl and a boy, identified with the initials R.A.S.C. and L.Y.R.M. According to local media, to find the culprits, the authorities reviewed numerous hours of security camera recordings in the area, carried out forensic studies and collected testimonies from neighbors. The analysis of the shells found at the crime scene was also crucial to identify the attackers.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the authors of the crime came to the neighborhood in search of a supposed drug dealer. When they did not find him and discovered that he had taken refuge on the roof, they proceeded to attack his family.
The case made even more echo when it was revealed that minutes before the massacre five elements of the National Guard were captured by the security cameras of the area. The official log did not register their presence in the area, which raised suspicions and questions about their role. It was then that on June 14, in his morning conference, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador detailed that these five agents are under the custody of the Armed Forces, although he did not specify the accusations against them.
Although initially it was said that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was behind the crime, they denied it the next day by leaving a banner, attributing responsibility to a group that calls itself «La Nueva Plaza». The attack has provoked widespread condemnation. The Office in Mexico of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (ONUDH Mexico) demanded a rigorous and impartial investigation that leads to justice for all those responsible.
