In recent years, the term «brain damage» has become popular in the context of the impact of digital technologies on humans. There are increasing concerns that excessive screen use lowers concentration ability, weakens memory, and may even lead to a decrease in IQ. However, scientific research does not confirm these fears.
An example can be a comprehensive study conducted in 2023 on a group of 120 children, which did not show a negative impact of screen time on brain function. Scientists did not observe changes in connections between different brain areas or evidence that the mental state of children deteriorated due to technology. Despite this, many people still believe that using electronic devices is harmful to mental health.
Many publications are based on assumptions, not actual evidence. For example, one of the most famous theories, according to which using e-mail allegedly lowers IQ more than smoking marijuana, turned out to be a mere myth — it was just a marketing campaign. Other studies, which link the rise in popularity of smartphones with a deterioration in mental health, also mislead. The mere fact that two phenomena occur simultaneously does not mean that one causes the other.
Moreover, technology also has positive aspects. People with fast internet access often feel happier and more socially active. Children using technology in learning achieve better results and are better prepared for the modern world. Scientists emphasize that the key is not the amount of time spent in front of the screen, but how it is used. If someone mindlessly browses social media, they may indeed have a problem with concentration. However, if the internet is used for learning or communication, there is no evidence of its negative effects.
Therefore, the claim that technology destroys our brain is not confirmed by scientific research. It is rather the effect of panic and fear of novelty. The most important thing is to use electronic devices sensibly: we should manage them, not the other way around.
