Екрани уништавају мозак? Шокантна истина!

The term «digital brain poisoning» has become a buzzword, but does it truly reflect reality? Some studies suggest that continuous screen use diminishes our ability to concentrate and disrupts cognitive functions. However, an Oxford University professor studying human behavior and technology believes there is no technological impact more dangerous than life’s beauty itself. The online world’s impact on our brain has long been a subject of debate. Some believe that constant exposure to screens alters brain structure, impairs memory, and reduces IQ. This causes great concern, as anxiety and stress can have a negative impact on cognitive functions in themselves. Yet, most scientists see no reason for panic.

In recent years, numerous studies have been conducted on the impact of digital technology, but many studies are of poor quality, conducted on small samples, and often draw exaggerated conclusions. Some research claims that the negative effects of screens are apparent, but scientific evidence does not confirm this. A 2023 study, which analyzed nearly 12,000 children in the US, found no evidence that time spent in front of a screen negatively affects brain functions. Also, no negative impact on the overall condition of children was observed. While no one claims that technology is completely safe, it also has positive effects. For example, young people who have access to high-speed internet and digital devices often feel happier.

The media and the public tend to exaggerate the dangers of the digital world, but scientific evidence does not support this panic. Some reports claim that using emails and social networks reduces IQ, but such claims often come from unreliable sources. For example, a 205 study suggested that sending emails affects intelligence decline more than marijuana. It was later discovered that this study did not exist at all, but was a myth originating from a press release. Our brain health changes over time, and it is natural for our attention to occasionally wander or for us to consume lighter content. People have always been prone to distractions and sought entertainment in everyday life. Tabloid newspapers were once popular, and today they have been replaced by social networks. The most important thing is to use technology consciously — we should not allow devices to control us, but we should control them.
